Breast Cancer Charity Day held at Warilla on Friday 23rd October in Memory of Kerryn McCann (Commonwealth Games Marathon Gold Medalist 2002 and 2006).
A bright sunny day greeted a large number of celebrities and players participating in a wonderful day held at the beautiful Warilla Bowls Club in memory of Kerryn McCann and raising funds for the McGrath Foundation.
The NSWWBA group made up of President Jewel Buchanan, Vice Presidents Patricia Reynolds and Pam Hockings, Treasurer Barbara Holden, Selection Committee members Leone Lesslie and Lynn Smith and Coaching Chairman Kathy Chatillon entered into the pink spirit of the day as shown in the following snapshots. We won the prize for the “best dressed table” and mingled with bowling identities and sporting celebrities alike as also evident in the photos displayed. Bowls Australia Brian Marsland travelled from Adelaide to attend the day.
Kerryn’s husband Greg and two of their three children, Benton and Josie were also present on the day and a presentation was made to Greg and his family of a montage of photos of Kerryn, both in sporting and personal moments. Also a holiday for the family on Phillip Island donated by one of the sponsors.
The day was organized by Karen Murphy and Kay Moran with the unending assistance of Karen Ferguson and staff from BCIB Insurance Brokers. The work that went into organizing such a day was mind boggling and we were treated to some wonderful entertainment and the catering by Warilla Bowls Club was once again of the highest standard. MC for the day was Steve Glasson who looked resplendent in his PINK suit and kept proceedings moving along with interviews and anecdotes throughout the day.
The Auction resulted in some enthusiastic bidding on some items and a few happy bidders departed the premises with some exciting memorabilia. The raffle of the day was well patronized in both donations and ticket sales and the total raised on the day is going to a very worthy cause in the McGrath Foundation.
Glenn and Jane McGrath were inspired to create a charity to support women with breast cancer and their families. Through her experience with breast cancer, Jane launched the McGrath Foundation in 2005 with two main objectives:
1. To raise money to place breast care nurses in hospitals right across rural and regional Australia.
2. To educate young women to become breast aware.
Breast Cancer is a disease that currently affects one in nine Australian women of all ages and backgrounds, and all women need to monitor their own health and well being.
Pam Hockings, Vice President.
