Inaugural Metro v Country O/60’s Tournament

held at Cabramatta BC on 18th and 19th May, 2008

Despite forecasts of inclement weather including rain, wind and a “cold front”, this inaugural series was held in sunshine matching the atmosphere of keen competition with a hint of fun and friendship. NSWWBA selectors selected 16 players from Metropolitan Sydney and 16 from Country NSW to play 3 games over 2 days. The Tournament was an overwhelming success.

The bowls competition, greens, accommodation and meals along with the superb organization of Cabramatta Bowling Club could not be faltered. About 100 spectators, including a busload from the Newcastle District enjoyed the games on Sunday.     Favourable comments were received from the players who all supported the concept of an annual event. All this would not have been possible without the generous financial support of Cabramatta Bowling Club, Comfitpro, BCiB, Sports Factory, Paynter & Dixon, NSWWBA and Retireinvest, Parramatta. The players excelled with the selling of raffle tickets for prizes supplied by Comfitpro which included a new set of Taylor bowls.

Bright red shirts and caps were worn by Country and emerald green for the Metro. Country was the winner 3-0 and even Peter Fitzsimons in the “Sydney Morning Herald” gave them a mention in the “Team of the Week”.

On Sunday evening several of the players performed various skits after dinner and this entertainment was superb!  This talented group of 32 senior bowlers with supporters witnessed the presentation of the “Sports Factory” trophy to Country Manager, Lynn Smith by NSWWBA Vice President, Margaret Osborne.

Sydney Master 2009 World masters Games

Monday, 25 February 2008

No other multi-sport event in the world attracts as many participants as the World Masters Games. Since 1985 the Games have brought together mature aged sports men and women from around the globe who share a commitment to the simple philosophy of "sport for life".

"Masters" is simply an age designation; it does not denote a level of proficiency or a particular achievement.  To compete, all you need to do is to satisfy the age criteria for your sport. The World Masters Games are for you.

The World Masters Games have been held on six previous occasions:

  • Toronto 1985
  • Copenhagen 1989
  • Brisbane 1994
  • Portland 1998
  • Melbourne 2002
  • Edmonton 2005

The seventh Games will be held in Australia's global city, Sydney, from 10-18 October 2009.
